Sunday 5th July proved to be a wonderful day for Preston Nomads CC. 2026
The North ground hosted a great T20 fixture played between a Sussex XI and Nomads XI all in aid of the Fulking Village Hall. The sun was blazing, BBQ firing and Pimm’s flowing as a healthy crowd of villagers and cricket lovers streamed through the Nomads gates to watch the game and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere.
The Sussex XI was captained by John Simpson and made up of 4 other first team players, a few Sussex O50s veterans and a couple of Sussex Mixed Disability players. The Nomads XI was a combination of 1s/2s/3s/4s players. The Nomads XI batted first and posted a competitive 191. Chief run scorers were Nick Greenwood and Jonty Jenner with 55 and 45 respectively. Jaedyn Bartosh-Short also made a classy 38.
Sussex’s reply got off to a flier with Grant Flower rolling back the years and effortlessly stroking elegant cover drives. At the other end Sean Hunt showed the crowd his power game and struck some huge sixes. The match momentum was turned on its head when the Nomads 4s skipper, Malorie Short, entered the attack. She showed great control of line and length to slow the scoring and also take key wickets, removing both openers (not bad scalps to have!)
The Nomads bowlers were able to build off the back of Mal’s spell and keep a check of the run rate and chip way with wickets at key moments. Tom Alsop struck some clean blows at the back end to bring Sussex close however Sussex fell 12 runs short in the end. Mal ended with 3 wickets and Jaedyn picked up 2.
All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable and great game of cricket. Huge thanks to John and the rest of his Sussex lads for giving up their Sunday and spending it at Nomads. Also big thanks to Nomads’ great barman Phil Brown for being instrumental in getting the day together. A great day for Preston Nomads CC and Fulking.
