Directions to Ground from A23
After the M23, continue on the A23 until you come to a sliproad turn-off to the left, signposted “Hurstpierpoint, Albourne and Henfield B2118 (B2116)”. (This turn-off is shortly after the B2300 to Hickstead).
After taking the sliproad, the road bends around to the right (don’t take the first left turning) and makes its way over the road from which you have just turned off (A23). At the mini-roundabout, turn left and drive through Sayers Common (past the “Duke of York” pub on the left) and for a further mile to a set of traffic lights, with a sign to “Hurstpierpoint” to the left and a round-roofed building on the right. Go straight ahead here.
In a further mile, you will come to a T junction, where you turn right, with a signpost to “Henfield B2117”. Drive down there for a further mile or so, passing Singing Hills Golf Club on the right. At the bottom of the road, just past the pub called “Shaves Thatch” on the left, there is another junction. In effect, go straight ahead here, onto the main road towards “Henfield, Horsham A281”. Do not go right.
After 300 yards, turn left into Clappers Lane. (It is easy to miss this turning and if you end up in Blackstone, you have gone a long way too far).
The ground is almost at the other end of Clappers Lane, approximately 2 miles. The lane is very narrow and at one point (halfway along), has a sharp bend to the right. Half a mile after that bend, there is another sharp bend to the right. The ground is just before this bend, on your left. Turn in there and follow the signposts to the parking area(s).
Directions to Ground from the West (Worthing) – along A27
Driving from Chichester/Worthing along the A27, you pass through North Lancing along a dual carriageway, until you reach a set of traffic lights, with Shoreham Airport on the right and the “Sussex Pad” pub and Lancing College on your left. It is useful to be in the inside lane, at this point. Go straight through the traffic lights, over the river Adur, and take the next slip-road signposted “Shoreham, Henfield, Steyning, Horsham A283”. This is a large flyover interchange. Keep following the signpost to “Henfield, Steyning, Horsham A283”.
Drive for 2 miles, past a dis-used cement works (after 1 mile) and then some houses on the right, until you reach a roundabout. Take the road signposted “Henfield, Small Dole, Upper Beeding A2037” and in 400 yards turn right at the next roundabout signposted to “Small Dole, Henfield A2037”. After 1.5 miles miles (during which you pass a Murco garage on the left), turn right to “Edburton (1.5 miles), Fulking (2.5 miles)”. Drive along this road to the village of Fulking. As you drive eastwards, the South Downs will be on your right, as will be the “Springs Smoked Salmon” shop. After passing the “Shepherd and Dog” pub, drive slowly through the village until the road bends to the right, signposted “Poynings and Brighton”. Do not continue on that road, but drive straight ahead into Clappers Lane. After 200 yards, just past the “Cabbage Patch”, turn right into the ground and follow the signposts to the parking area(s).
Directions to Ground from Brighton/Hove and Lewes (from A27)
From the A27, take the slip road signposted to “Devil’s Dyke”. After a double roundabout, drive towards “Devil’s Dyke” for 500 yards, where there is a right bend in the road, which you stay on. (Do not go to “Devil’s Dyke”). Driving for 3 miles, you take the second turning on the left. This is just past a house on the right named “High Point”. The signpost to this turning is currently missing, but it takes you down a narrow road to a T junction (on the left is the Poynings Church).
Turn left at this point and drive through the village of Poynings, passing the “Royal Oak” pub on your right. Continue to drive westwards, with the South Downs on your left. As you pass a flint walled barn on your right, you will see the Preston Nomads CC ground, across two fields.
Shortly after this, the road bends to the right and, almost immediately after, to the left. Do not continue on this road at this point, but instead turn right into Clappers Lane. After 200 yards, just past the “Cabbage Patch”, turn right into the ground and follow the signposts to the parking area(s).
Note for Coaches
We request that coach drivers approach the ground from the northern end (Henfield end) of Clappers Lane. This is because of a couple of very sharp turns in Fulking and on the southern part of Clappers Lane. The approach from the north is not without difficulty, but it is the easier of the two and we have had issues with coaches getting stuck in the Fulking area.
