1st Team ‘ruthless’ in dispatching Brighton in the Sussex T20 Cup.

4Th May 24 Round Up

To have a chance at the show case Hove final in September you need to show intention in the early rounds. Our 1st team were brilliant at Lindfield yesterday in a 6 wicket win against Brighton and Hove Cc.

The fixture was just a few overs old as ‘quicky’ Zayn Khan ripped out the top order with a stunning hat trick. One Lbw and two bowled.  His figures of 4 overs 3 for 5 worthy of winning any match.  However, while Zayn will get the plaudits our team were in mercurial form both with the ball and out in the field. Brighton just couldn’t get going and despite 41 runs from Adam Mates they had to settle on 84 all out.

That was never going to be especially as opener Dan Phillips steered the team to a comfortable victory top scoring with 24 and two boundaries.

Zayn said later ‘I am delighted to have got the hat trick. The plan was to bowl fast and at the stumps, so it was pleasing it all worked out well!’

Nav said ‘we wanted to be ruthless out there and we did that. I am very happy for Zayn he bowled extremely well’   We asked about what was next for the team he replied ‘we go to Middleton on Saturday to open our 2024 Sussex League campaign. They beat us twice last season so we will want to get off to a winning start!’

Bowman says ‘thanks to Lindfield CC for hosting, its always lovely to watch cricket at your home facility. Good luck for the season ahead. Our 1st team has evolved over the winter with new faces joining the squad. It was very exciting to watch them in their 1st game together. Everyone seem to be having a lot of fun. There was some great skills on show!!.

Twos, a little rusty at Rottingdean Sussex T20 defeat.

Aaron Phillips shining light for the Nomads. 59 runs.

Our Twos bowed out of the competition after defeat in the hands of Rottingdean Cc. George Ledden lite up Falmer Road with two massive 6s on route to 52 runs as Nomads struggled to contain.  Abdulwahb Shafi hit 4 maximums to bludgeon 43 off 22 balls as the hosts rested on 204 runs. 33 extras will need to be addressed going forward.

In reply the inns was held together by the popular Aaron Phillips who hit one 6 and 10 fours on route to a 37 ball 59. The team though eventually falling for 120 all out.

Bowman said ‘thanks to Rottingdean for hosting and good luck for the season.  Our Twos can now fully concentrate on the bread and butter for 2024 and that’s Division Two survival. They can enjoy a week on the training ground, freshen up and prepare for the visit of Ifield on 11th May 12.30 start’

Stephen Oliver half century aids Third team against Lindfield.  SCMG friendly

It was all smiles on the South Ground as our Threes ended their preseason with a nice win over Lindfield 2.  Treasurer Stephen Oliver smashed a six and seven boundaries on route to a top score of 54. Zidane Khan was also in great nic scoring a run a ball 45.  Our new Ladies Senior Captain (4th Team) Malorie Short scored a pleasing 8 not out off 12 balls.  We rested on 235 for 7 off the allocated 40 overs.

Zidane then starred with the ball taking three for 17 off 9 as Lindfield wilted. Danny Carey Poynting took two for 3 bringing the game to a rapid conclusion. The visitors 115 all out!

Bowman said ‘huge congrats to the team I am sure you all had a lot of fun out there on our gorgeous south ground in that sunny weather. However, it all gets very serious on Saturday as we focus in on the 2024 League programme.  Threes have a very tough gig at competitive Palmers while the 4s host Ardingly 1s. Let’s Go people!’

To sum up our opening week it has to be huge congrats to Nav and his team at Lindfield. These early Sussex T20 rounds can throw up some ‘banana skins’ but our boys came through with flying colours.

The League starts next Saturday!
