U13s Overcome Late Wobble to Win Sussex ECB Cup at Blackstone Against Cuckfield 28/6

Published On: June 28, 2024Categories: News and Reports

Before we get into the action, huge thanks to everyone at Blackstone for looking after us this evening.  Brian Sandalls (former Nomads turf legend) and his team are doing a fine job on the property. It looked stunning out there.  Also huge thanks to organiser Matt Parsons for his time and expertise.  The event went extremely well.

Our U13s, under the management of Ralph and Rupert, seem to have it all.  Star quality, confidence, basic’s covered but also have the ability to dig themselves out of a hole.  It’s a combination that is intoxicating to watch and will ultimately be difficult to beat.

Under sunny skies Cuckfield won the toss and they elected to bat.  F Bunday pinned them back early as he bowled the dangerous Duffield for 5.  R Scutt then took a great catch as Bunday got his second for just 4 runs.   Change bowlers E Khan and R Scutt (no wides off his two) bowled beautifully conceding just 13 runs in four overs.  Cuckfield middle order batter C Mole was doing really well but had to depart injured.  A real shame for him and his team.   E Scamardella produced perhaps the champagne moment with the shot of the night.  A wonderous straight six. However, J Humby responded with a jaffa to remove his middle stump next ball.

Cuckfield settled on 93 for 5.  It was a great effort from the Nomads. However, on first impressions our extra’s count seemed ok.  BUT on further and calmer inspection of the scorebook we gave up 32 which on another day will certainly go against you (Cuckfield only offering up 7!!!).  U13s if you are reading this is the 2nd time I have written this.  Please have a good think about it!

H Scrase and R Scutt were asked to go open and stay for the long haul.  Both batters were excellent in the opening salvo against some frightening pace.  Harry hit an amazing six with what appeared to be a flick of the wrists on route to 27.   A brilliant opening partnership of 40.

Two wickets in two balls gave Cuckfield a lifeline.  That was temporally strangled as O Hewitt continued a brilliant season with a 10 ball 30 and retirement. Cuckfield then got back into things in a big way with three quick wickets leaving the score 77 for 5.  It was a wobble but nothing our U13s couldn’t handle. A Yule and E Khan soothed all nerves calmly seeing Nomads over the line after just 13 overs.

Ralph told waiting media ‘I am very proud of the team; we bowled well and kept them to a reasonable total.  Harry went looking for opportunities up top as Rupert was the glue’  As to the future he said ‘ we will do our homework on Bromley and see where it takes us!’  The ultimate final of this competition will be played at Lords stadium. Of that Ralph said ‘we are here to win games of cricket so why not!’

Bowman said ‘huge congrats to Cuckfield on making the final and playing really well on the night. Good luck for the rest of the season.  However, this Nomads side is pretty special and seem to have a real depth of talent. I don’t think we have seen the best of them this season and there is a lot more to come. (Just tidy up that extra’s column). Good luck as you prepare for Bromley in the next round (date to be confirmed). As to Blackstone Man of the Match goes to Rupert Scutt who not only bowled well and took a good catch but also opened with maturity and patience.

U13s Have a great weekend. You have done us proud!
