Last Ball Thriller at Poynings!
Huge congratulations to both teams for producing a brilliant game of cricket which had a large crowd enthralled until very late in the day. The game had a bit of everything including two Nomad injuries and the distinct possibility of a tie as Man of the Match Tom Brookes faced the last ball off Theo Rowland. Young Abbad Khan made that last gasp grab to send Nomads in delirium.
Under very warm and bright conditions at beautiful Poynings skipper Faisal won the toss and decided to have a bat in this 40 over competition. Our 1st league ton maker Sameer (24) is having a great debut season with us and carried on as he and William (27) put on 42. George got yet another great start but is finding ‘going on’ really tough this season. He was cruelly run out for 22. Nomads star Adam Rowland 54 n.o. was our ‘engine room’ with four sixes before he developed a rather worried limp. He had the need for a runner as he finished the inns. Poynings will rue 48 extras as Nomads settled to 221 all out. Adam had to get ice on a troublesome calf injury.
Huge thanks to Poynings, in particular club legend and Master Baker Tim Cutress and the tea ladies for producing an exquisite tea of home-made savouries and cakes. It was truly appreciated by us Nomads. A real treat.
Eliott Atkins got the reply off to a great start scoring a quick 34. However, it was Poynings veteran left hander Tom Brookes who kept his side in the hunt. Youngsters Theo, Abbad and Will all bowled extremely well getting two wickets a piece as Poynings wobbled to 146 for 7. However, our 3s are never ones to do things the easy way as those extra’s started to pile up. Angus Yule produced a brilliant and spellbinding run out of the dangerous Alex Jones. The ground then fell silent as our Skipper put all his effort into saving a boundary but rolled his ankle in sickening fashion. After a few moments on the deck he was lifted to his feet and carried on. At 208 for 9 and game in the balance Tom hit two back-to-back boundaries to set up 4 needed to tie off the last ball.
Enter Theo and Abbad! Nomads Erupted.
Khan, who was heading straight off to A and E said ‘I am absolutely buzzing! We might have dropped a few catches, but we were confident we could do it. Our youngers were gunning for it! As to his injury he said ‘its hurting but as the senior player I had to put my body on the line!
Bowman says ‘It truly was the Match of the Day! huge thanks to Poynings for hosting at your delightful ground and facilities. You guys have something very special going down and it was wonderful to see an army of fans watching on. Good luck for the coming games! Our Threes are putting their fans and themselves through the wringer, now with four close ones on the spin. Extra’s were back on the menu this week (48) which was disappointing. The club sends huge messages of support and best wishes to Adam and Faisal with their injuries. With back-to-back wins our 3s have got themselves into promotion discussion and can look forward to the 2nd half with excitement. The Nomads Man of the Match goes to a young man who has been at the club for some while as a fan. He has developed into a brilliant spinner. 8 overs 2 for 17 and holding his nerve under that last gasp catch, Abbad Khan
