Cuckfield crowned 2023 Sussex Premier League Champions.
Rains Spoils Mayfield Conclusion after excellent Nomads Fielding display. 26/8/23
22 cricketers were left frustrated as mid-afternoon rain fell across the beautiful setting of Mayfield CC. For the Nomads it ultimately didn’t matter as 53 miles to the west Cuckfield were tanking Bognor to pick up their first ever Sussex Premier League Title.
Nav and the 1st team travelled east to Mayfield for their penultimate Premier League match of 2023. A win for Nomads and a loss for Cuckfield would have taken us into a very exciting last match with the title still up for grabs. Nav decided to have a bowl.
We found the pitch very much to our liking as Patel and Khan produced pace and bounce. 18 for 2 quickly became 40 for 3 as Nomads held three very good catches. T Killops glued the Mayfield inns together with a steady 35 but the other batsman kept hitting the ball sky wards. Jenner caught a stunner at mid-wicket to complete a top-class fielding display. The hosts had to settle on 129 all out. Baalaaj Khan will be pleased to pick up his first Premier League wicket!
A nice tea produced by Mayfield. Thank you very much for that.
Just three balls into the response a shower passed over which, at first looked innocuous, however it gathered pace. The umpires did everything they could to complete the game but heavy rain stifled every effort. By around 4.30 pm there was a dark cloud over the away dressing room as we all knew that our 2023 Sussex Premier League title hopes had gone.
Bowman said ‘many thanks to Mayfield for hosting and good luck in your last game. I really do love coming to your ground so hopefully you are promoted straight back to the Premier League for 2025. Huge congratulations to Cuckfield CC for winner their debut Sussex League Premier Title. You guys beat us at the SCMG and have played excellent cricket all year long winning 11 matches. Worthy Champions!’
