Brilliant Game at Ansty but Nomad’s Threes Batters Fall Short
The 1st inns of Ansty 2s v Nomads 3s turned out to be a great advert for Sussex Division 5 with both teams playing at a very high level in a good spirit. Openers Parker (38) and Croydon (32) battled well against some tricky elements. Then the Nomads bowlers got on top aided by four wonderful catches. Ian Jones eight overs two for 11. When Rafiullah Gul ran 50 yards to pick up the dangerous Croydon Nomads were very much on top. However, Belfort (55) and Smith (37) restored the inns with a brilliant mid order partnership. Then just as the hosts threatened to go large our competitive skipper David S, picked up 6 for 31. Ansty finished on 207 all out. A fascinating and entertaining battle.
Unfortunately for skipper David our batters couldn’t repeat the good work out in the middle. Experienced James Downey looked mercurial and even had the benefit of a dropped catch on route to 33. It was the right stage for him to go on but he was bowled just as we looked to be getting on top. James Oliver on 17 played a half drive straight up and Martin R chipped to mid field. Nicholas Beck top scored on 37 but couldn’t go through with his effort. The last pair David and Ian were given far too much to do as we stalled on 166 all out. Chris Nutter the pick of the bowlers 4 for 42.
Whilst it was a very good game of cricket at Ansty and many thanks to them for hosting and looking after us. Man of the Match and skipper David will be a little disappointed this morning that we couldn’t collect the points. There will be a lot of pondering trying to arrest a won 2 lost 4 situation. Our Three’s will need a positive response at home next week against Ram.
In other news Dan Phillips will be rueing the coin toss at Cuckfield. Our hosts won that and of course decided to have a bowl in tricky batting conditions. We scored 140 all out with Kash top scoring. Our bowling attack was brilliant in response and had Cuckfield eight down. With nerved frayed an almighty six over the clubhouse won it for the hosts as the ground erupted!
Our 2nd team continued their great form against Bexhill. Skipper Oliver Gatting was perhaps the star with 67 not out as they chased 167. We now top Division 3.
Perhaps the stand out result goes to our 4th team under Justin S who got their season up and running. In a low scoring game Luke S scored 46 in 104 all out. However, Freddie Garth making his seasonal debut took 5 wickets for 18 as St Matthias faltered. That win might make all the difference to our 4th team vibe and the Press Officer couldn’t be any prouder.
Good luck to our 1st Team at Roffey today in the ECB Cup and also best wishes to all connections of our U12s World Cup Day.
