Skipper Dan Sparkles in ECB Opener.

Nomads 1st team were in imperious form as they cruised past a well drilled and hard working Lindfield Swans outfit.   The visitors, of Sussex Division Two, played some great cricket and after an hour looked set to make it a tricky afternoon.  However, our new club captain Dan Phillips stole the limelight with a mature and entertaining knock of 100 not out.

Swans skipper Shiv won the toss and decided to have a bowl.  He said ‘ the track has been under cover so there might be a bit of juice which will help our seam attack. We hope to get amongst them’.  Well that theory worked very well for them as Ahmed took three quick wickets.  In a high tempo start Usman Khan made a very quick 31 runs but five great catches had the Swans looking dangerous at 120 for 5.  However, Dan started to get his head down and graft assisted by Don Shepheard as a heavy rain shower passed over the ground.  Tea taken.

From ball one after tea the whole game changed as Dan calmly hit a boundary.  From that moment both Dan and Don (31)  revelled  in the sunshine as the scoreboard ticked along nicely.  It seemed evitable that Dan would go on to score an unbeaten ton.  The score 260 for 6.

I have to admit to not seeing the response, but the Swans finished on 157 all out.

Dan gets my man of the match award as we reach the 2nd round on 12th May 2019.  Going forward it does appear that our 1st team openers seem to want to get on with things fast.  We could be in for some thrilling starts this season.  We wish Lindfield the best of luck for the season.

Meanwhile our 3rd team couldn’t see out the threat of Ifield twos in their Division 5 opener.  Nomads found wickets hard to come by as the hosts ended on 233 for 5, Joe Smith with a ton.  Both Oliver Gatting and Taron made excellent half centuries in response, but wickets fell at the wrong time leaving Nomads 19 runs short.  Skipper Symes picked up a painful knee injury which might see him out of action for a week or two.  He said ‘whilst we can take the positives I thought we played really well and should of gone on to win that game,  it’s a little disappointing’  David if you are reading get well soon mate, we need you back.
