MEMORIES OF PRESTON NOMADS

Dennis Bignell 1931 -1937

The team was:

Spen Cama (Captain), Den Bignell, Don Bignell, Ron Jordan, Arthur Oliver, Eric Arnold, Mr Wooley, Bert Bridle, Roy Packett, Guy Homewood, Sam Davey, Charlie Perry, Harry French (Wicketkeeper).

Marjorie Homewood was the Scorer and, in her absence, Betty Bignell.

"My brother Don and myself were approached by Preston Nomads, when we were at a trial at the County Ground. The approach was made by Bert Bridle, who was the Secretary of the Club."

"The Club used to play at Patcham School grounds in Winfield Avenue, Brighton, as we didn't have a ground of our own. When we played at grounds like Lurgashall, we would travel in one of the lorries of Sam Davey, who was a local builder, with our wives/girlfriends coming along as well. It was a very bumpy ride!"

"Before we were able to start playing at Fulking, Sam Davey lent us pick axes and we went over to the field Spen had bought, to clear it of scrub."

"In 1937 when the ground was ready for play, we would catch the bus to the Dyke and walk down. Very few people had cars then, but I remember Spen having one." Spen's mother often came to watch, with her little dog."

"We would play local teams such as Brighton Tech., Portslade, Southwick, Rottingdean, Heighton, East Brighton, Brighton Grocers and Brighton Electricity - I remember Noel Bennett playing for them."

"On Sundays,we always played one match at Cuckfield and always one against Lurgashall, in August. Only once did we have 100 scored against us (we were such a strong bowling side) and that was by Cuckfield who had one of their players on holiday from his university side. My brother, Don, and I used to open the bowling. I was a fast bowler and my brother a slow bowler."

"Refreshments were often provided by Charlie Perry, who owned a bakery in Brighton. The girls would all help to make the teas, using a big urn."

"Spen was a real gentleman. In spite of being the best all rounder in the team, he never monopolised a game."

Dennis Bignell (Vice President)

All Time Greats

Keith Pitt has done an outstanding job collating all available records from the League's inception in 1971 and putting together runs, wickets and averages as concise as they can be. The 1st XI is virtually complete, but there are defficiences in the quantity and quality of the 2nd XI data.

A complete archive of all available competitive averages was completed for all Preston Nomads teams covering the period from 1971 to 2005.  This archive is stored on the Preston Nomads Cricket Club computer and copies can be obtained via the webmaster who will notify the Archivist.  Data for the 1st and 3rd elevens is complete, but some years are deficient for the 2nd XI.  Since 2006 a new version of the archive has been formulated working on the basis of the original full one.  This now looks only at complete playing careers in all 4 Club elevens.  It is in two parts, batting priority and bowling priority.  In the batting section, leading run scorers are listed in the order of their career totals, with their bowling summary attached if relevant.  The converse is displayed in the bowling section.  The leading 25 players are included in each part.
