PNCC CRICKET ACADEMY - 2005/2006

The PNCC Academy, contained 24 youngsters, identified as having special ability or exceptional potential, from the age of12 years to 20 years. Those selected for the Academy members were chosen by the Colts Manager (Neil Chapman) and the Director of Cricket and Coaching (Steve Gatting).

The objectives are to work with the youngsters on an individual, one-to-one basis, within groups of four, during 2-hour net sessions. This will mean that every Academy student receives their coaching once every three weeks.

The coaching took place on Tuesday evenings, at the Sussex CCC Indoor School, from 7pm to 9pm, throughout the period from 8 November 2005 to 20 December 2005 and then from 10 January to 18 April 2006.

The coaching for the Group 1 cricketers is provided by Les Lenham, the internationally recognised coach, and Steve Gatting provides the coaching for those in Group 2.

Mr Lenham and Mr Gatting liase with those other coaches of the individual youngsters, from their schools or Sussex CCC, with a view to providing continuity of advice and techniques, etc.

THE SPEN CAMA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

1. The Scholarship

The scholarship has been established, as a memorial tribute to Spen Cama, who, throughout his life sought to fulfil his passion to provide opportunities for young cricketers to maximise their potential in a sport that he loved.

Preston Nomads Cricket Club is in the enviable position of being able to continue with Spen’s aims, through the hugely generous legacy he left to the Club. Indeed, the Club feels obliged to develop this and other programmes for young cricketers for as long as it is able to do so.

2. Objectives of the Scholarship

The Scholarship has the following objectives:

  1. To provide the opportunity every year for one young** cricketer from Preston Nomads Cricket Club to develop his game and fulfil his potential through an innovative scholarship programme;
  2. To enable the rigorous development of all aspects of the scholar’s game, including the physical, mental and technical aspects, in order to maximise his cricketing potential;
  3. To provide a life experience for the scholar, through an extended period of coaching/training in South Africa.

(** The guideline to the age of the players selected for the scholarship is 18 –24years)

3. Details of Programme

One PNCC cricketer can be selected to spend one winter as a “Spen Cama Memorial Scholar” from October to the following March, with a short break over Christmas back in England.

Prior to Christmas, the scholar would play league cricket for a carefully selected club side in the Port Elizabeth area. From January to March, he would attend the University of Port Elizabeth International Cricket Academy.

The first scholar to be selected as the 2004/2005 scholar was Steve Snell, who did not join the Scholarship until after Christmas, having spent the autumn in Australia instead.
